Although pet owners do whatever they can to protect their pets, they still have the possibility of getting lost or stolen. According to the American Humane Association, about ten million pets go missing from their homes every year in the United States. To prevent this from happening to your pet, our team at PetWell Veterinary Healthcare in Atlanta provides microchipping. We recommend microchipping dogs and cats to ensure their protection and safety.

Microchipping

What Is a Pet Microchip?

A microchip is a small, rice-sized device that transmits a unique number whenever it is scanned. This number is then matched to a national database to find out your contact information. A microchip is inserted into the pet's skin between its shoulder blades. No anesthesia is needed since the procedure is as simple as receiving a vaccine.

What You Need to Do to Make Sure the Microchip Works

After the microchip is placed in your pet, you need to go to https://www.homeagain.com to register your pet's microchip and update all contact information. We will fill out the basic contact information for you.  After your appointment, you will want to go to the website to add any additional information. Once a year, you will want to update any life changes such as address, phone number, photo of your pet, and email address.

Benefits of Microchipping Your Pet

Microchipping is a safe and effective way to ensure you and your pet are never separated. No pet is too young or too old to be microchipped. While ID tags are at risk of falling off your pet, your pet's microchip has your information stored in your pet permanently.

Side Effects

Side effects are very rare after your pet gets a microchip. The most common side effects include minor bleeding or swelling at the injection site.

How Long Do Microchips Last?

Microchips usually last for the rest of your pet's life. To make sure that your pet's microchip is still working correctly, we recommend scanning your pet's microchip at least once a year at their annual exam. Microchips usually stay in place, but sometimes they can move to another part of your pet's body. This is another reason why it's good to have the chip scanned every year to ensure it's in the right place.
