Acupuncture is an ancient method of healing that’s been around for over 3,000 years. It’s not meant to replace conventional medicine but acts to compliment it. Acupuncture has been successful in helping humans reduce their chronic health conditions. And now, veterinary medicine has expanded to include this form of natural treatment for animals. At PetWell Veterinary Healthcare in Atlanta, our staff is ready to provide the care your pet needs.
What Kind of Pets Benefit from Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been shown to help both cats and dogs suffering from arthritis, chronic back pain, conditions like kidney disease, orthopedic issues, arthritis, liver disease, general behavior problems, neurological disease, and stress. We also use this therapy to treat cats and dogs suffering from spinal injuries and other issues in the musculoskeletal system.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
It is believed that the body has certain channels that transmit energy. These channels are called meridians. When these channels are blocked, illness or pain occurs. Acupuncture helps keep the meridians working properly. It is also believed that acupuncture releases endorphins, which work as natural painkillers for the body. Acupuncture works best when used with the appropriate herbs, food therapy, and often a massage regimen
What’s an Acupuncture Session Like?
Acupuncture performed by Dr. Bockstedt consists of inserting extremely thin needles along the meridians of the pet’s body. The needles are thin, sterile, and used only once. The needles may be gently manipulated by hand or hooked up to minimal amounts of electricity if stimulation is needed.
Your first session lasts approximately 2 hours, and follow-up sessions last 1 hour. The number of sessions a pet needs depends on the condition being treated and the pet’s overall health. Most pets need at least 2-4 treatments depending on the chronicity of their condition. We will provide a thorough evaluation of your pet’s health before we begin the therapy to ensure acupuncture is right for him or her.
